pk & i made a vow to attempt a horror movie viewing every night during the month of October to celebrate Halloween!  last night, we kicked it off with the French film, Martyrs.

here is the plot summary:

Fifteen years after a horrifying experience of abduction and prolonged torture, Lucie embarks on a bloody quest for revenge against her oppressors. Along with her childhood friend, Anna, who also suffered abuse, she quickly descends, without hope, into madness and her own delusions. Anna, left on her own begins to re-experience what Lucie did when she was only twelve years old.

this movie is not for the weak at heart.  it’s incredibly moving, horrific, brutal, and abusive.  the strong willingness to survive, the yearn to be loved, and the quest for the unknown are all themes of this movie that are displayed visually through the director’s eyes.  the movie almost feels like it’s separated into three parts, each significant.  i was thoroughly impressed by this movie, although it was squeamish at times.  it can definitely be categorized as a torture film.  i highly recommend it though!
