…which, of course, will be my last, since I have since tied up a brand-new real-life job. But I’m happy with how this turned out. I’ve never been the “host” of anything before, and this was designed to be a regular exercise in beefing up those lacking talents of mine. Oh well! 🙂

Unemployment office ridiculousness April 16, 2009

So, there was a mistake on my unemployment filing.

I clicked the wrong box, or something, when making the claim and the paperwork sent to me stated I was “not available” for accepting full-time work, which is obviously not true. It’s taken me several days to get through to the unemployment office over phone because so many people are flooding their phones. I’d even been reduced to writing down the correct numbers I needed to get through phone’s menu system, to ensure I can work through the system as fast as possible. Unfortunately, when I finally connected with someone on the phone, they told me someone else had to contact me to fix the mistake. The phone system is only to file the “fix,” then someone will e-mail me to actually make it happen.

What the hell.

It’s been an interesting month.

Yes, I still don’t have a “job,” but there’s good news to report: I’m turning some down. I’m humbled to know there are places out there interested in having me join their efforts, but after a long discussion with kt, we decided it made more sense for me to wait until something comes along that really strikes my interest, rather than taking the first offer that comes forward. That’s not even to lessen the possibilities inherent in the offers I have seen — I also want to see what it’s like to be writing on my own.

On the plus side, I’m seeing my name appear in publications all over the Internet. That’s flattering. On the down side, there’s not much money to be made. People’s budgets these days are slim to none, so even if you are doing good work and people want you to contribute to their table, they don’t have much to offer in return. It’s my hope this part of the business will bounce back, but I don’t hold optimism that’s something that will happen in the near term. Instead, I turn my efforts elsewhere.

For example, I’m partnering with someone to produce a weekly video podcast about iPhone games. I’ve never hosted a video podcast before; I’ve only been a part of video shows where, essentially, my conversation was being filmed. You can see some recent examples of this from my appearances on the show Co-Op. I’ve included a recent episode below. Skip to when we’re talking about the game Halo Wars to hear me.

I’ve also filed for unemployment. I’m working, but it’s inconsistent contract work, and I was laid off. While MTV did not cover health insurance or provide other employee-like benefits, they did have me on a regular contract, which means they were paying unemployment taxes. So, I’ll be riding the government wave, while also contributing freelance where I can pick it up. Between that and kt’s awesome job, we should be just fine. It’ll be tight, and we’re always finding ways to cut corners (no more taxis!), but we’re not going to be any more homeless than we were before!

If you want to check out some of the writing I’ve been doing…
