our first stop was checking into our motel. THAT was an interesting venture. it was a little scary ‘Bates-like’ motel. there was graffiti on our door, a hole in the wall and comforter, and a scary ‘someone might have died in here’ presence. sometimes, being cheap doesn’t pay off! but it sure made for a great laugh throughout the night!

we dropped our stuff off, hoping that it would still be there when we returned later in the night.

our next stop was the santa monica boardwalk. there are always fun people watching to be had on this boardwalk.

we found out that Circus de Soliel had set up shop next to the boardwalk to perform their KOOZA show.  something we marked on our to-do list.

pk had planned on walking down the boardwalk to the end, where a glorious mexican restaurant sat perched at the tip.  we have visited this boardwalk before, and gawked at the delicious seafood burritos this place lured it’s customers with.

pk and i sat in the back, overlooking the ocean.  the sun was now starting to set, which was perfect timing, might i add.

we ordered the sloppy pile of chicken nachos and our giant mugs of dos XX while listening to a acoustic serenade of romantic ballads.  it was perfect.

after a fun getaway trip to santa monica, pk and i decided to make our own pizza for dinner on sunday night.  i ran to trader joes to get some pizza dough.  for only $1.09 or so, their pizza dough is affordable, delicious, and premade!  i also grabbed a jar of marinara sauce.

we added yellow squash, mushrooms, onions, peppers, grated fontina and aged gouda cheese, and popped it in the oven.  it was a glorious end to our wonderful weekend!!!

It is said that Halloween is the night when the dead rise to walk among us and other unspeakable things roam free. The rituals of All Hallows Eve were devised to protect us from their evil mischief, and one small town is about to be taught a terrifying lesson that some traditions are best not forgotten. Nothing is what it seems when a suburban couple learns the dangers of blowing out a Jack-o-Lantern before midnight; four women cross paths with a costumed stalker at a local festival; a group of pranksters goes too far and discovers the horrifying truth buried in a local legend; and a cantankerous old hermit is visited by a strange trick-or-treater with a few bones to pick. Costumes and candy, ghouls and goblins, monsters and mayhem… the tricks and treats of Halloween turn deadly as strange creatures of every variety-human and otherwise-try to survive the scariest night of the year.

the interwoven stories seem unrelated in the beginning.  then they all fell into place like a giant puzzle.  it was a brilliant.  i enjoyed the diversity of kills in this movie.  the stories were all different yet connected.  Anna Paquin‘s all female gang and their end scene was on of my favorite parts of the movie.  it was a total WTF?!? moment that had you hooting and hollering!  this movie blended together well, it kept me interested and anxious for the next scene.  it is one of the best current halloween movies i have seen in a long time.  Trick ‘r Treat is a MUST SEE!

Where The Wild Things Are is not for kids. It’s an adult adaptation made for people who read the book, cherish it and grew up.

It’s not a fun, whimsical adventure on an island full of furry creatures, but a supremely powerful art film whose resonance is entirely dependent on your own childhood experiences. That’s the biggest “X” factor for this film. What you bring into Where The Wild Things Are will determine what you get out of it, and unlike many other instances where this happens, you can’t really control this one.

It’s a movie made for people who grew up with the book and not something I’d immediately recommend to children. You have to grow up to appreciate what director Spike Jonze created. But if you had a troubled childhood, if you ever felt like a loner and nobody understood you, Where The Wild Things Are has the potential to really speak to you.

It did for me.

It’s often a sad movie, but a lovely and inspired one.

When the unexpected happens, architect Jonathan Rivers has become a grieving widower, wallowing in deep confusion over the death of his wife. But a paranormal expert approaches Jonathan with the unlikely: the ability to hear his wife from beyond the grave. Through a form of unusual communication known as EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon), Jonathan will finally be able to see his wife. But in doing so, Jonathan has drawn himself into a much more complex situation when his curiosity becomes an obsession. Only that obsession will have him confront those not of this world, and some of them don’t approve of Jonathan’s interference with their destructive nature.

*sigh…unfortunately, this film did not reach the captivation i was looking for.

i know that EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenom) exists and believe in it.  but this movie just takes it to a ridiculous comedic level.  it almost makes fun of EVP instead of being an understanding film dedicated to that subject.  really, people get killed by EVP?  that’s a hokey way to portray things.  and this subject is hard for many people to believe on it’s own.  i think they did a poor job at portraying a fascinating phenomenon.  it was disappointing.  it was NOT scary.  it was pathetic.  and although i love Michael Keaton, especially in Batman, he should pick better movies…
